Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route

Overview 

Experience the iconic Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro with this comprehensive 7-day climb. Arrive at JRO or Arusha and transfer to Moshi Impala Hotel for an overnight stay and a briefing with your mountain guide. On Day 2, transfer to Marangu Gate (1,400m) and begin your ascent, reaching Mandara Hut (2,700m) after a 3-4 hour climb. Explore Maundi Crater in the afternoon before dinner and an overnight stay at Mandara Hut. Day 3 involves a challenging 7-8 hour climb through forests and moorlands to Horombo Hut (3,720m), with full-board accommodation. On Day 4, acclimatize at Horombo with full board. Day 5 takes you through the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to Kibo Hut (4,703m) for full-board accommodation. On Day 6, start your summit climb shortly after midnight, reaching Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and then Uhuru Peak (5,895m) by sunrise. Descend to Kibo Hut for lunch, then continue to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight. On Day 7, descend to Marangu Gate, arriving around noon for a picnic lunch. Transfer to Bristol Cottages in Moshi for a day room before heading to the airport for your flight home or the start of a safari.

Day by Day Plan

Day 1

Arrive JRO or Arusha, transfer to Moshi Impala Hotel for overnight Bed/breakfast. Meet your mountain guide for briefing.

Day 2

After breakfast, transfer to Marangu gate 1,400m to start the climb. Climb For 3 – 4 hours to Mandara hut 2,700m for lunch. Afternoon tour Maundi Crater. Dinner and overnight Mandara Hut.

Day 3

Rise early and climb for 7 – 8 hours through forests and across open moorland (this is a 10 mile walk) to Horombo Hut ,720m. Fullboard Horombo Hut.

Day 4

Acclimatisation at Horombo with fullboard accommodation.

Day 5

Climb through the saddle lying between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to Kibo hut 4,703m with full board .

Day 6

Rise shortly after midnight and climb for 6 – 7 hours Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) situated on the crater rim and watch dawn break over a hot cup of tea. Continue round the rim for 1 – 2 hours to Uhuru Peak 5,895m. Descend to Kibo hut for lunch. Descend further to Horombo hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 7

This is the last day on the mountain. Descend to Marangu gate arriving shortly after noon. Picnic lunch. Transfer to Bristol Cottages in Moshi for day room, then transfer to the airport for flight home or start a safari as the case maybe.
