Wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a year-round loop through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in search of grass and water — and predators follow close behind.

Ndutu & Southern Serengeti
The fertile short-grass plains turn into calving grounds and predators are seen hunting the new-born calves.

Central Serengeti
As the long rains fall, the herds begin moving north-west in long columns through green landscapes.

Grumeti River
The herds gather in the west and face their first river crossings.

Northern Serengeti
The famous crossings of the Mara River — dramatic and unpredictable.

Eastern Serengeti
With the short rains the herds move back south towards the calving plains.
Tips for a migration safari
Most visitors need a visa. Many nationalities can apply online through the official Tanzania Immigration e-visa portal before travelling. Your Tanzania visa also covers Zanzibar. Please check the current rules for your nationality.
Northern safaris start with a pick-up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and a night in Arusha. Southern safaris start at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
A 4x4 safari vehicle with six seats and a roof hatch for game viewing. Some itineraries include scheduled flights between the parks.
All our driver-guides speak English. French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese-speaking guides are available on request.
Travel insurance is not included in our packages, and we strongly recommend comprehensive cover including medical evacuation. Zanzibar requires visitors to hold its official inbound travel insurance — please check the current requirements before you travel.
A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from, or transit through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Consult a travel clinic about recommended vaccinations a few weeks before you travel.
Malaria is present in much of Tanzania, including the safari parks and Zanzibar. Ask your doctor about prophylaxis, use insect repellent and wear long sleeves in the evening.
Drink bottled or treated water. Drinking water is provided on safari.
